Professor Anne Luik opens the dream of Estonia as an organic country, silently emerging all over the land and uniting individuals and communities into action. Anne is the grand lady of Estonian organic agriculture, whose work was recognized by Estonian President. She is one of the first scientists who started to research and implement environmentally friendly methods in agriculture and has initiated many activities in this field.

A biologist-geneticist of Tartu State University, today professor emeritus of Estonian University of Life Sciences Anne Luik is the founder of the Foundation of Organic Farming as well as the Research Centre of Organic Farming. She is the initiator of the First International Scientific Conference of Organic Farming held in 2009 in Estonia. She also founded Organic Scholarship for young researchers to promote research in the field of organic food and farming in the Estonian University of Life Sciences. In the beginning of 2018 the work of Anne Luik was recognized with the Order of the White Star of the fourth Class presented her by Estonian President.

More than ten years ago Anne Luik decided that she would like to live like in her childhood – in the countryside. She found an abandoned hereditary farm near Tartu that she has turned into a cosy home where she lives year-round and tends to her garden, organically of course.

“Estonia is a beautiful, many-sided and small country that could be caring and understanding and really become an organic state. It has necessary preconditions for that. It’s nature is diverse. Half of our land is covered with forests, we still have clean water and have kept our animistic relationship with nature – we are a bit foresters and cherish nature. With its area of organic agricultural land Estonia is among the first three countries in Europe. And our forests are certified organic too.”
